One of the easiest ways to give your space a new look is with pillows.
If you asked my husband about our current pillow situation, he would roll his eyes.
I have a whole cupboard dedicated to pillow covers and I am not about to stop adding to it.
If you want to add a pop of seasonal color or just some added texture, adding new pillows to a space is an inexpensive way to change up the look.
WHAT SIZE PILLOWS SHOULD YOU USE?
The first thing you need to look at is the shape and size of your sofa.
Below I will show you different ways to layer different size pillows on your sofa, whether you have a loveseat, sofa, or sectional.
WHAT INSERTS SHOULD I BE USING?
Inserts are key for a plush designer look.
You always want to use a down/feather filled pillow insert.
Some of the inserts inexpensive pillows come with are thin and lay flat and look very cheap.
Keep reading to see where you can buy some of my favorite inserts for your pillows.
HOW TO MIX AND MATCH PILLOWS:
When it comes to picking out throw pillows you want them to compliment each other and not compete.
You also don’t want them to all be the same. You’ll want to add coordinating colors and contrast.
Mix and match your florals with stripes and solids,
Stand back and look at your arrangement and make any necessary changes.
I tend to choose textured fabrics over busy patterns.
I also like mixing different materials like linen, faux fur, etc.
CREATE A COLOR PALETTE
Let the color of your sofa be your jumping off point.
Our sofa is off white so I like to use different hues of tans, creams, blacks, and greys.
All colors that aren’t too bold and that blend together nicely.

Let’s dive deeper into pillow sizing with my pillow size arrangements for your sofa, starting with a sectional.
I like to start by using my biggest pillow first. Typically that is a 24″ pillow.
Place those on the ends of your sectional.
Then layer in the next size which would be 22″ pillows. One next to each 24″ pillow and also one in the middle of your sectional.
Next, add in your smaller pillows. I like to use 20″ pillows. If you choose to, you can use lumbar pillows in addition to, or instead of.

Now let’s apply the same concept to your sofa!
Start with the largest on either end. I like to use 22″
Then add a smaller 20″ or 18″ {I prefer 20″} next to each of those.
Finish off the center with a lumbar. I like to use a 12×24.

And finally, here is a guide for you to use if you have a loveseat.
Start with the largest on either end again.
Since the loveseat is a lot smaller, start with 22″ pillows.
Then add in 18″ pillows next to each one.

As you can see, it is all about layering.
WHERE TO PURCHASE INSERTS:
A good insert does not need to be expensive, you just need to get the right one.
I have bought so many different inserts over the years, I feel like I am an expert at this point.
Honestly, I do not prefer the ones from Pottery Barn. Skip those all together.
Crate and Barrel and Amazon have some of my favorites.
If you want a really really full plush look, size up your inserts too.
For example, if your pillow cover is 20″, size up the insert to a 22″ and so on and so forth.
Crate and Barrel euro insert. I use these for my 24″ pillow covers.
