This all started when I saw these ceramic coasters at the Dollar Tree.
I have been needing coasters at home and thought about a fun designer coaster hack I could do with these.
Here is what you will need to make these DIY designer coasters.
SUPPLIES:
coasters from the Dollar Tree, or anywhere else you can find inexpensive ones
wallpaper samples, keep reading to see where I get mine!
spray adhesive
acrylic coating spray
sanding block or sandpaper
drop cloth to protect your surface
WHERE TO GET WALLPAPER SAMPLES:
I order mine from here.Â
They are $5 a sample and if the sample is big enough, you can get 3 coasters out of one.
The gamble you take is that you might only be able to get one out of one sample.
Choose wallpapers that blend in with your decor.
Maybe you have a schumacher pillow on your sofa that you love?
Order the matching wallpaper sample to coordinate!
If you don’t want to spend $5 on wallpaper samples, I am sure there are other places to buy them, or even get them for free.
Etsy is a great source for wallpaper samples, especially cool vintage ones.
I also found a bunch of places simply by doing a google search for FREE WALLPAPER SAMPLES.
Once you have your coasters and wallpaper samples, you are going to want to cut them into squares.
I did this simply by tracing around the coaster with a pencil on the backside of my sample, then cutting out.
I used a paper cutter, but scissors would work just fine.
Lay your dropcloth outdoors to protect your surface.
Lay your coasters face up on the dropcloth, and your wallpaper squares face down.
Give both a spray of the high strength adhesive.
Once both are coated, place the wallpaper squares face up on each coaster, smoothing out with your hands.
Once the glue comes in contact with each other you can NOT reposition them, so make sure to get it on straight the first time.
The wallpaper squares will be a tad bigger than your coaster once adhered.
That is ok!
That is what you want.
Now take your sanding block and with downward strokes go around all 4 sides of the coaster until the excess paper is removed.
Lightly brush off any excess dust that may have settled on top.
The final step is to seal them so they are waterproof, which is what you want them to be because they ultimately they will be getting wet from your drinks.
Let dry and that’s it!
These coasters come with a cork bottom already on them to protect your surface further.
I have to say, I had so much fun making these that I went back to the Dollar Tree to buy about 20 more.
I now own about 30 coasters, probably way too many for a family of 4, but I just couldn’t help myself.
These DIY designer coasters are so easy and fun to make!
I will add that you could do this same thing with scrapbook paper if you have that laying around instead.
You could even print out photos and adhere those to the coasters!
The possibilities are endless.
If you make these, please share and tag me on Instagram so I can see!
