Our dark and moody dining room makeover is complete!
I am over the top excited with how it turned out and I hope it inspires you to do a little DIY yourself!
I have so much to say about this space, so grab a cup of coffee and settle in.
If you have been following along on Instagram, I have been sharing the journey of how I created a dark and moody accent wall. In case you missed it and would like to see, I saved it to my highlights reel under “accent wall.”

BEFORE:
It wasn’t bad but I wanted to warm it up a little and add in some drama with darker colors.
So, out came the white Ikea cabinets and my vision began.
AFTER:
I have just as much storage now, if not more. I did purge a lot of things and only kept the things I really love.
This corner which used to have a vertical white cabinet now has a little cabinet which fits oh so perfectly in this space. It holds barware and on top I have created a little vignette with some bar accessories.
I added a gallery wrapped canvas to the wall of our dog cash, which makes me smile every time I walk by.
Right around the corner on the stairwell wall is a couple of black and white ski prints which I leave up year round.
Through the fog art can be found here and into the white can be found here.
The battery operated light is such a great piece that looks expensive but is under $30.00. I have them in our living room too!
The piece de resistance to this new dark and moody dining room makeover is this accent wall plus the addition of my new steel shelves!
I created the wall using pieces of white MDF cut down to different lengths to create a patchwork sort of pattern on the wall.
Once the pattern was determined, it was easy to cut the pieces to length and attach with an air nail gun.
Then I filled all the holes in with spackle and created a paint spray booth so my husband could spray on the final color.
We went with the same color as our bedroom, Benjamin Moore Graphite.
It reads black in our bedroom but in the dining room with all the light it reads more of a charcoal. I love this color!
Next up, we added black electrical outlet covers and then came the shelving!
Bigger is always better when looking to create a big impact.
I had seen these shelves on a designers website and it was love at first sight.
These are called the Tromso Steel Floating Shelves from Shelfology.
They are SUPER heavy duty. I believe one of them weighed over 100 pounds.
I was a little intimidated about hanging them but they went up so easily, my husband and I were both shocked and pleased.
You can customize them to the exact length you want and the exact width you want.
For the top shelf I went with 72″ long by 6″ deep, and for the bottom I went with 72″ long by 12″ deep.
The backplate on them is magnetic and covers up all the screws used for mounting. The design is genius.
We couldn’t be happier with them!
When it came to decorating the shelves I went with the less is more approach.
I framed a tapestry I made that says “go jump in the lake.”
Want to make your own? This post shows you how, and no sewing required!
Then I framed a picture of our sweet Oakley who passed away recently.
I love the little opening in the frame I used.
For the bottom shelf I have a couple books {AD At 100, and The New Southern Style} stacked one on top of the other.
On top is my giant wood links which are one of my favorite pieces to style with.
Next to that is a new to me limestone sphere I purchased here. I love the texture it adds to the space.
On the end I filled a vintage style wood vase with neutral faux florals I found locally.
To ground everything I brought up a metal cabinet that was in our basement and filled it with all my extra dishes, pitchers, bowls, and more barware. I think it was an old World Market piece. You can find a similar style here.
