DIY peony canvas art

This project was so much fun!

I saw a tutorial on Tis Tok for something similar and I knew I had to try it. I hope you try it too, you’ll feel like such an artist!

I don’t even know what you call it. Embroidery? Line art? Canvas art? Call it what you want, it is just fun.

Today I am joining in with a group of bloggers to show you all things peonies. Peonies are one of my favorite flowers. I just love them. The ones in our yard aren’t quite blooming yet.

Wanting to try this embroidery project, I decided that stitching a peony would be perfect.

You can stitch anything you want. Just find a simple line drawing. I searched Pinterest for a “peony line drawing” and found the most simple one. Even though it’s simple, it still took a bit of time to stitch. I think I watched two shows on Netflix while stitching it. Not a bad way to pass the time.

Ok, enough babbling, here is the project finished, then I’ll show you how you can make one too.

Isn’t it great? The best thing is the you can use any colors you’d like and any design.

Start out with a canvas, I used a 11×14″ size.

Take a piece of painters tape and run it corner to corner.

Leave one side white and paint the other side the color of your choice.

Print out your line drawing on a piece of paper and tape it onto the dried canvas with painters tape.

Now comes the fun part. Take a sewing needle and following the lines in your drawing, make holes through the paper and into the canvas punching a hole essentially. Do this in equal distances over the whole piece until every line is covered.

These aren’t the best pictures, but you can see the spacing I used and all the holes.

Once everything is punched you can remove the paper.

Next you will use embroidery thread to do back stitching through all the holes. If you are wondering what the heck backstitching is, watch this video which explains it.

You will stitch the white side of your canvas with your contrasting color thread, in my case black.

Then you will use white thread on the colored side of your piece.

If you need to, you can reference back to your sheet of paper to see where the stitching goes.

Once you are done, hang it on the wall, prop it on a shelf, or whatever you’d like.

Put it somewhere you can admire your hard work {even though this is super easy!}

I put mine on my cookbook stand in our kitchen. I suppose it would have been more appropriate to put peonies in the vase but these lilacs from our tree will have to do.
