Don’t you hate it when you see something you love but the price tag doesn’t fit in your budget?
Or maybe it does, but you change up your decor so often that you don’t want to risk spending thousands of dollars only to realize your style has changed or you find something even better?
This DIY art project came about when I found a really ugly canvas at Goodwill.
It was red with flowers on it.
I think everyone knows by now that I don’t have much color in my home, so red would be a no go.
However, it was a great size and it was cheap enough for me to try this DIY on.
If it didn’t work, I’d only be out $9.00.
Introducing the Crate and Barrel modern art knockoff!
I have loved this piece ever since I saw it on The House Of Silver Lining blog.
Isn’t it so pretty in her office?
I started by painting the entire canvas a mushroom color.
I used leftover paint I had, Annie Sloan Country Grey.
Then when that was dry I painted the center section White Dove by Benjamin Moore.
Again, because it was what I had on hand.
Finally I got out my black paint and painted the rest.
Painting abstract art is super simple.
That is partly why I chose this piece to mimic.
Also, it doesn’t ship out until February!
I was so happy with how it turned out, I decided to buy a modern frame to go around it to finish it off.
I believe the frame itself was around $75.00, but for under $100 I am really happy with my new art.
Not to mention the Crate and Barrel art is around $1,000.00.
And the best thing about this project, is that if you aren’t happy with it, paint over it and start again!
The frame I selected goes perfectly with these that I have family photos in just across the hall.
Another fun knock off you can try is my ring top canisters that you can see in our coffee bar.
What do you think?
I bet you will be looking at inexpensive canvas’ a little differently next time you go thrifting!
