~How to make & frame a silhouette~

Many of you asked how to make the silhouettes that I showed of my dogs in this post.
So, while I was making some of my kids, I thought it would be a good time to show, as I used the same method.
These are really easy to do.

All you need is two contrasting colors of paper,
{I used black and off white}
and a pair of scissors, a glue stick, a printer, a photo, and your frame.

For the silhouettes,
you can use any type frame but I prefer oval ones for this project.
I found some unfinished wood ones at the thrift store for $1.99 each and painted them black.


Then take a picture of your subject from the side.  It is best to do this with a solid background for clarity.  Print it out to the size of your frame opening.
The quality of the photo does not matter at all.


Cut out your piece of cream card stock for the background. 
If you are doing an oval you might want to practice on a piece of regular paper first to make sure you get the size right.


Next, cut around your photo.
You will want to be very careful when you do this and use a good pair of sharp scissors.
Even the slightest slip and your silhouette could look nothing like your subject, so take your time.
Cut the bottom any shape you’d like.
It is helpful to google silhouette images and see what looks best.

You can either trace this image onto black card stock, or do as I did and copy the images on the printer using black paper in the feed.


Carefully cut the image out again and use a glue stick to adhere it to your background paper.


Place it in your frame and you are all set!



I like to pencil in the name and age of the child on the back so years later I can remember how their silhouettes looked at that age.
