Sometimes my favorite Halloween decorations are the ones I make myself, and DIY Pottery Barn Witches: An Easy Halloween Decor Dupe might be one of my favorites yet. I was inspired by the whimsical handmade look of Pottery Barn Halloween decor and wanted to create my own version for our coffee bar.
I love that these little witches aren’t overly spooky or cutesy. Their imperfect shapes and creamy neutral finish fit right in with the rest of our home, while still adding a fun touch of Halloween.
And grouped together? They are just so cute!

Pottery Barn Inspiration for These Witches
You know I love finding ways to get the Pottery Barn look for less, especially when it’s something I can recreate myself.
For these witches, I wanted that same handcrafted, slightly imperfect look you often see in high-end seasonal decor. Instead of worrying about making each witch identical, I leaned into the irregular shapes.
The tall pointed hats, simple round heads and long bodies are what give them their personality.
Honestly, I think the imperfections are what make them so charming.

Supplies for DIY Pottery Barn Witches
One of the best parts of this Halloween DIY is that you don’t need a long list of supplies.
You’ll need:
- Air-dry clay or your favorite moldable craft material
- Water for smoothing
- A small container of water
- Paintbrush
- Creamy white or off-white craft paint
- Optional beige or taupe paint for aging and dimension
- A protected work surface
- Air dry clay also comes in black!
How to Make DIY Pottery Barn Witches
The beauty of this project is that you don’t need to be an artist or sculptor. In fact, don’t try to make them perfect!
Step 1: Create the Witch Bodies
Start by forming a simple elongated cone shape for the body of each witch.
I made mine in different heights so they would look collected when grouped together rather than like a matching set.
Keep the bottoms relatively flat so they’ll stand upright.
Step 2: Make the Heads
Next, form a small ball for each witch’s head and attach it to the top of the body.
You don’t need to add facial features. Keeping the faces completely simple gives them that modern, sculptural look I was going for.

Step 3: Make the Witch Hats
This is the part that gives them all their personality!
Form a small brim and then add a long cone-shaped piece on top to create the classic witch hat.
Don’t worry about getting the hats straight. I actually prefer them a little crooked and wonky.
Bend the tips slightly in different directions so each witch has her own look.

Step 4: Let Them Dry
Once you’re happy with the shapes, allow everything to dry completely according to the directions for the material you’re using.
Be patient with this part. You want them completely dry before adding the finish.
Step 5: Add the Finish
I wanted mine to have an aged, handmade appearance rather than looking bright white and brand new.
A creamy white finish keeps them neutral, while subtle variations in the surface help bring out all those imperfect details.
You can lightly layer in a warm beige or taupe if you want even more dimension.
The goal isn’t perfection. You actually want some variation in the finish so they look handmade and almost vintage.

Decorating My Coffee Bar for Halloween
Once they were finished, I knew exactly where I wanted to use them.
Our little coffee bar is one of my favorite places to change up seasonally because it doesn’t take much to completely transform it.
I grouped three witches together on a rustic wood riser and added a framed witch silhouette beside them. The black, white, aged wood and touches of brass work so well together.
I also added another witch to the shelf above with a couple of neutral books and a brass bowl.
It’s Halloween decor, but it still feels like our home.

A Simple “Drink Up Witches” Coffee Bar
I mean… if you’re decorating a coffee bar with witches, how can you not say Drink Up Witches?
I kept everything else fairly simple so the handmade witches could be the stars.
The Nespresso machine, white mug, neutral pumpkin and cookbooks keep the lower portion of the coffee bar functional, while the shelves above give me a spot to have a little fun with seasonal decor.
It’s festive without requiring me to redo the entire kitchen for Halloween.

Why I Love These DIY Pottery Barn Witches
I think what I love most about these is that they don’t look mass-produced.
They’re a little crooked. The surfaces aren’t perfectly smooth. Each hat has its own shape.
That’s exactly what makes them special.
They’re also proof that you don’t have to buy all-new seasonal decor every year. Sometimes a little inspiration and a few basic craft supplies can give you the high-end look you love for much less.
And when Halloween is over, I can pack these away and bring them back out year after year.
More Halloween Decorating Inspiration
If you’re decorating for Halloween too, don’t feel like you have to cover every surface.
Pick a few spots in your home where seasonal decor will make the biggest impact. A coffee bar, kitchen shelf, entry table or mantel is often all you need.
Mixing handmade pieces with things you already own also helps Halloween decor feel collected instead of overly themed.
