If you’re looking for a simple and eco-friendly craft project, this easy paper mache bowl made from peat pots and Elmer’s glue is the perfect choice. It’s a fun, beginner-friendly craft that requires just a few basic materials, and the best part is that it’s completely customizable. You can create a beautiful, functional bowl for home decor, storage, or even as a gift. This method is not only budget-friendly but also sustainable, as you’re reusing peat pots to form the bowl’s base.
Let’s dive into the easy steps for making your very own paper mache bowl using only peat pots and glue!
Supplies you need for your easy paper mache bowl
- Peat pots (the base material for your paper mache bowl, I used all 40}
- Elmer’s glue (or any white school glue, I used 2 containers}
- Water
- Saran wrap (to protect the mold)
- A bowl (to use as a mold for shaping your easy paper mache bowl)
- Paint (optional, for decorating the finished bowl)
- Sandpaper or sanding block
Step 1: Prepare the Mold for your easy paper mache bowl
Start by preparing the mold that will shape your easy paper mache bowl. You’ll need a bowl to form the shape of the finished bowl. Cover the outside of your bowl with Saran wrap to protect it from getting stuck to the glue. This makes it easy to remove the paper mache bowl once it’s dry. You can use any size bowl depending on how large you want your finished bowl to be. The Saran wrap will ensure that the mold can be easily removed later, leaving you with the perfect bowl shape.
Step 2: Tear the Peat Pots into Strips For Your Easy Paper Mache Bowl
Next, tear the peat pots into strips. Peat pots are soft, fibrous, and easy to tear by hand, so you don’t need any special tools. Tear them into pieces about 1-2 inches wide. The natural, earthy appearance of the torn peat pots will contribute to the rustic look of your finished bowl.

Step 3:
Let the torn pieces soak in water for about 30 minutes to soften.
Step 4-
Little by little add pieces of wet peat pots to a blender with some of the water from your pot they are soaking in.
Step 5-
Place the pulp into a strainer and little by little squeeze out any excess water and sit on a towel to further soak up any extra water.
Step 6: Layer the Peat Pot Pulp For Your Easy Paper Mache Bowl
Now, start layering the pulp over the Saran-wrapped mold. As I started this process it seemed really easy. Then as I started going down the sides of the bowl, pieces started to break off. That is when I decided to get out the reinforcements. I literally brushed on elmers glue all over and it really helped the pieces to stick together. When I got the entire bowl covered with the pulp, I dumped on even more glue and smoothed out the lumpy pulp with my hands.
Step 7: Let the Bowl Dry
Once you’ve covered the mold with enough layers, let the paper mache dry completely. Depending on the thickness of your layers, this could take anywhere from 24 to 48 hours. Be sure the bowl is completely dry before moving on to the next step to avoid any collapse or weakening of the structure.
Step 8: Remove the Mold and Saran Wrap
After the paper mache has dried, carefully remove the Saran wrap and the bowl mold. You should be left with a sturdy paper mache bowl with the shape of the mold you used. The texture of the peat pot pulp will be visible, giving the bowl a rustic, natural look.
Step 9: Finish the easy paper mache peat pot bowl
You can sand any rough edges off and if you’d like you can paint it or leave it as is.
