Fall Caprese Pasta Salad with Black and White Bowties is proof that pasta salad isn’t just for summer. This easy recipe combines fun black and white bowtie pasta with juicy cherry tomatoes, creamy mozzarella, fresh basil, red onion, and a simple homemade balsamic dressing. It’s fresh, flavorful, and just a little unexpected—making it perfect for fall entertaining, Halloween dinner, or any gathering where you want to serve something that looks as good as it tastes.
And believe it or not, this entire recipe was inspired by a thrift-store find.
The Inspiration Behind This Fall Caprese Pasta Salad
Sometimes a recipe starts with an ingredient. Other times, it starts with a really great thrifted find.
This one started with the serving utensils.
I found the most incredible vintage claw serving utensils while thrifting and knew immediately that I needed to use them on a fall table. They’re quirky and a little unexpected, with just enough of a Halloween feel without being overly themed or kitschy.
Basically, they’re my favorite kind of seasonal decor.
Once I had the servers, I started thinking about what I could actually serve with them. I wanted something dramatic enough to hold its own next to those claws, but I also wanted it to be a recipe we’d genuinely want to eat.
Enter the black and white bowtie pasta.
The second I saw it, I knew exactly what I wanted to make.
I took the flavors of a traditional caprese salad—tomatoes, mozzarella and fresh basil—and turned them into a pasta salad. The black and white pasta gives the entire dish a moody fall look, while the tomatoes and basil add beautiful color.
Add those thrifted claw servers, and it might be one of my favorite fall dishes I’ve made.

Why You’ll Love This Fall Caprese Pasta Salad
Aside from how fun it looks, this Fall Caprese Pasta Salad is incredibly easy to make.
There aren’t a lot of complicated ingredients, and most of the prep is simply chopping and tossing everything together.
It’s also a great recipe for entertaining because you can prepare most of it ahead of time. Serve it alongside grilled chicken, sandwiches, soup, or your favorite fall dinner, or make it the star of a casual lunch.
I especially love it for Halloween because the black and white bowtie pasta gives it a festive look without having to turn the food into something overly themed.
It’s Halloween food for people who don’t necessarily want their dinner shaped like ghosts and eyeballs.
Fall Caprese Pasta Salad Ingredients
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 12–16 ounces black and white bowtie pasta
- 2 cups cherry or grape tomatoes, halved
- 8 ounces fresh mozzarella pearls
- 1/2 small red onion, thinly sliced or finely chopped
- 1 generous cup fresh basil leaves, roughly torn
- Freshly ground black pepper
- Flaky sea salt, to taste
- Optional: shaved or freshly grated Parmesan cheese
If you can’t find black and white bowtie pasta, don’t let that stop you from making this recipe. Regular farfalle works perfectly, too. You just won’t get quite the same dramatic fall look.

Homemade Balsamic Dressing
The dressing is simple enough that it doesn’t overpower the fresh caprese ingredients but has enough flavor to bring everything together.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
- 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 small garlic clove, finely minced
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Instructions
Add all of the dressing ingredients to a small jar with a tight-fitting lid.
Shake vigorously until the dressing is completely combined and slightly emulsified.
Taste and adjust the salt, pepper or honey as needed.
You can make the dressing ahead of time and keep it refrigerated until you’re ready to assemble the salad. Give it another good shake before using.
How to Make Fall Caprese Pasta Salad
Bring a large pot of generously salted water to a boil.
Cook the black and white bowtie pasta according to the package directions until al dente. You don’t want to overcook it, especially for pasta salad, because the pasta will continue absorbing some of the dressing as it sits.
Drain the pasta and allow it to cool.
While the pasta is cooling, halve your tomatoes, chop the red onion and tear the fresh basil.
Add the cooled pasta to a large serving bowl.
Add the tomatoes, mozzarella pearls, red onion and basil.
Pour about half to three-quarters of the homemade dressing over the salad and gently toss everything together. Add additional dressing as needed.
Season with freshly ground black pepper and a little flaky sea salt.
I like to reserve a small amount of dressing to add immediately before serving. Pasta tends to absorb dressing as it sits, so this freshens everything back up beautifully.
Finish with additional fresh basil and Parmesan if you’d like.
Then, of course, bring out your best thrifted claw serving utensils.

A Few Tips for the Best Fall Caprese Pasta Salad
Don’t overcook the pasta. Al dente pasta holds its shape better and gives the finished salad a much better texture.
Let the pasta cool before adding the mozzarella. You don’t want hot pasta melting those little mozzarella pearls.
Use fresh basil. Dried basil just isn’t the same here. Fresh basil is one of the main flavors in caprese, so this is the place to use plenty of it.
Save some dressing. If you’re making the salad ahead, don’t use every drop of dressing right away. Reserve some and toss it into the pasta shortly before serving.
Taste before serving. Cold foods often need a little extra seasoning. A pinch of flaky salt or fresh pepper right before serving can make a huge difference.
Can I Make This Pasta Salad Ahead of Time?
Yes!
That’s one of the reasons this recipe is so good for entertaining.
You can cook the pasta and make the dressing earlier in the day. Assemble the salad a few hours before serving and refrigerate it, but I recommend saving some of the fresh basil and dressing to add at the last minute.
Take the pasta salad out of the refrigerator about 20–30 minutes before serving. The flavors and textures are better when it isn’t ice cold.
Give it a gentle toss, add a splash more dressing and finish with fresh basil.
What to Serve With Fall Caprese Pasta Salad
This salad works with so many meals.
For an easy fall dinner, serve it with roasted or grilled chicken and crusty bread. It would also be delicious alongside sandwiches, soup, grilled steak, or as part of a larger buffet.
And because the ingredients are so simple, it’s an easy dish to bring to a potluck or fall gathering.
For Halloween, place it in a large black serving bowl and add a fun pair of vintage or thrifted serving utensils.
It looks festive without trying too hard.
The Thrifted Details Make It More Fun
I love finding ways to mix vintage and thrifted pieces into everyday entertaining, and those claw servers are the perfect example.
You don’t necessarily need to buy an entire set of seasonal dishes or decorations to make a table feel special.
Sometimes one quirky vintage piece is all it takes.
The claw servers gave this whole dish a slightly spooky feel, while the simple black bowl and black and white pasta kept everything looking more elevated and understated.
That’s one of my favorite things about thrifting. You never know what you’re going to find—or what idea that find might inspire.
So next time you’re at a thrift store, don’t skip over the serving pieces. Look through the utensils, bowls, platters and odd little kitchen accessories.
You might just find the piece that inspires your next recipe.

Easy Substitutions
Can’t find one of the ingredients? This recipe is very forgiving.
You can substitute regular bowtie pasta for the black and white version.
Instead of mozzarella pearls, cut a larger ball of fresh mozzarella into bite-size pieces.
You can also use heirloom cherry tomatoes for even more fall color.
If you prefer a little more crunch, add chopped cucumber.
For extra flavor, try adding sliced olives, artichoke hearts or a handful of arugula.
You could even add grilled chicken to turn this side dish into an easy main course.
How to Store Fall Caprese Pasta Salad
Store leftover Fall Caprese Pasta Salad in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days.
The pasta will continue to absorb the dressing, so leftovers may be a little drier.
Before serving again, toss the pasta with a small drizzle of olive oil or additional dressing and add a little fresh basil.
I wouldn’t recommend freezing this pasta salad because the tomatoes, basil and fresh mozzarella won’t have the same texture once thawed.
