Oyster Shell Candle DIY Tutorial Easy Coastal-Inspired Project
If you love a good thrifted find turned into something beautiful, this oyster shell candle diy tutorial is one of those projects that feels equal parts elevated and effortless.
I originally spotted a bag of oyster shells at the thrift store and immediately knew they had potential… I just didn’t know for what yet. Of course, by the time the idea for candles hit me, they were gone.

So I did what we all do and headed to Amazon, ordered a set, and got to work.
These turned out even better than I imagined. They’re organic, slightly imperfect in the best way, and perfect for summer nights—especially if you live on the water like we do. They add such a relaxed, elevated feel to a table or coffee table setup without trying too hard.
If you’re looking for an easy DIY that looks high-end but costs very little to make, this is one you’ll want to save.
Why you’ll love these oyster shell candles
These are one of those projects that check every box. They’re affordable, easy to make, and look like something you’d find in a boutique.
Each shell is completely unique, which gives them that collected, curated look. They work beautifully for summer entertaining, coastal-inspired decor, or even just a simple cozy night at home.
They also make a great gift idea. Bundle a few together and they instantly feel thoughtful and elevated.

tutorial steps
Step 1: Prep your shells
Make sure your oyster shells are clean and completely dry. If needed, rinse them and let them air dry fully before starting.
Because oyster shells are naturally uneven, take a minute to see how they sit on a flat surface.
Step 2: Level the shells
This step makes a big difference.
I found it easiest to prop each shell up using random items like small bowls, folded paper towels, or napkins so they sit as level as possible before pouring the wax.
This helps the wax set evenly and prevents uneven burning later.
Step 3: Add the wicks
Place your wick in the center of each shell. These heat resistant stickers make all the difference.
You can also secure it with a small dab of hot glue, or simply hold it in place while pouring the wax. Use a skewer or chopstick across the top of the shell to keep the wick upright and centered.
Step 4: Melt the wax
Melt your wax using a double boiler or microwave in short intervals, stirring in between.
Be careful not to overheat the wax.
Step 5: Pour the wax
Slowly pour the melted wax into each shell.
Do not overfill. Oyster shells are naturally wonky, and overfilling can cause wax to spill as it melts down when the candle is burning.
Step 6: Let them set
Allow the candles to cool and fully harden. This usually takes a few hours.
Keep the shells propped in place while the wax is setting so everything stays level.
Step 7: Trim the wick
Once the wax has hardened, trim the wick to about ¼ inch using a wick trimmer.

Styling ideas for these
These are where this DIY really shines.
Scatter them across a table for a relaxed summer look, use them as part of a centerpiece, or style them on a tray with wine, marble, or wood accents.
They’re perfect for outdoor dinners, casual entertaining, or even just adding a soft glow to your home in the evening.
Because they’re neutral and organic, they work with so many different styles without feeling overly themed.

Safety notes
Never leave a flame unattended.
Wax may drip out of the shells as they melt due to their natural shape.
Always place candles on a heat-safe surface.
Keep away from children and pets.
