There is something a little bittersweet about Savannah’s room to guest room transformation. After our daughter Savannah moved to Tennessee, we decided it was time to give her room a new purpose and turn it into a cozy guest retreat.

For Savannah’s room to guest room transformation, I wanted the space to feel warm, comfortable and elevated, but I also didn’t want to spend a fortune. I’m so happy with how it came together because nearly everything in this room was surprisingly affordable, yet I think the finished space looks much more high-end.

I also wanted to keep a little bit of Savannah in the room. Since Nashville is her new home, I added a few subtle nods to Tennessee throughout the space. Nothing overly themed, just small personal details that make me smile.

Savannah’s Room to Guest Room on a Budget

One of my biggest goals with Savannah’s room to guest room makeover was showing that you really don’t need to spend a lot of money to create a beautiful, high-end-looking bedroom.

I kept the color palette soft and neutral with whites, creams, warm wood tones and touches of black and brass. Keeping everything in a similar palette allowed me to mix pieces from different stores and price points while still making the room feel cohesive.

The bed, nightstands, rug, chandelier, bedding, curtains and motorized shades were all affordable finds. Once they were layered together, the room immediately felt more finished and expensive.

Texture was also really important. Rather than bringing in a lot of color, I layered the duvet cover, sheets, geometric blanket, faux fur blanket, pillows, {RH but thrifted} curtains and rug to give the room warmth and dimension.

Choosing the Right Bed for Our Guest Room

I was very intentional about choosing a lower-profile bed for this room.

My parents are getting older, and I wanted something that would be comfortable and easy for them to get in and out of when they stay with us. It was a good reminder that a guest room needs to function just as well as it looks.

The upholstered bed has a simple, modern shape that works perfectly with the rest of the room, and the lower height makes it much more practical for our guests. Did I mention it is under $200.00?!

For the bedding, I layered a duvet cover, sheet set and two different blankets in soft neutral shades. I love mixing subtle patterns and textures when decorating with neutrals because it keeps everything from feeling flat.

Savannah’s Room to Guest Room Curtains and Shades

The curtains might be one of the biggest transformations in the entire room. They instantly made everything feel softer, taller and more finished.

We also added a motorized shade over the window behind the bed. With the push of a button, guests can easily raise or lower it without having to reach over the bed or deal with cords. It is one of those little conveniences that makes a guest room feel extra special.

Another unique feature of this bedroom is the sliding glass door. It gives our guests their own private entrance, which I love. The full curtains provide privacy when needed but can be pulled completely open during the day to let in all of that beautiful natural light.

A Soft Rug That Doesn’t Shed

The rug was another great find. It is incredibly soft underfoot and, maybe even more importantly, it doesn’t shed!

Because we have dark wood floors, the large light-colored rug really brightened the room and helped define the sleeping area. It also adds another layer of softness without competing with the rest of the neutral palette.

This is another piece that looks much more expensive than it actually was, which was exactly what I wanted for this room.

Stocking the Nightstands for Guests

I wanted the nightstands to be pretty, but I also wanted them to be useful.

Inside the drawers I stocked some of those little things guests might need or forget to pack, including cell phone chargers, extra toothbrushes and toothpaste.

It’s such a simple thing to do, but I think those thoughtful details are what make someone feel really comfortable when they’re staying in your home.

I kept the tops of the nightstands fairly minimal with a few books, candles and decorative pieces.

Adding Nashville Details to Savannah’s Room to Guest Room

Because Savannah now lives in Nashville, I knew I wanted to include a few nods to her new home.

One of my favorite details is the large papier-mâché bowl filled with a bunch of her cowgirl hats. Instead of putting the hats away, they became part of the decor. I love how they look piled together, and they add a personal touch without making the room feel themed.

I also added Nashville books to the nightstand styling and made the simple Nashville wall art.

I love that these little Nashville touches are subtle. You might not notice all of them immediately, but they make the room feel personal and still connect it back to Savannah.

Affordable Pieces That Look High-End

Probably my favorite thing about this makeover is just how affordable so many of the pieces were.

I’ll link the duvet cover, sheet set, both blankets, nightstands, rug, chandelier, bed, curtains, motorized shades and some of the decor throughout this post so you can easily find anything you’re interested in.

Mixing affordable pieces with thoughtful styling is one of my favorite ways to decorate. I would much rather find something inexpensive that looks beautiful than spend more just for the sake of spending more.

Simple things like hanging curtains high, choosing an appropriately sized rug, layering bedding and repeating the same neutral tones throughout the room can make inexpensive pieces look so much more elevated.

Savannah’s Room to Guest Room Isn’t Quite Finished

There are still a few things I want to add to the room, but I’m actually going to wait until we visit Savannah in Nashville.

I love the idea of finding a few special pieces while we’re there and bringing them home for this space. It will make the room feel even more connected to her and her new life in Tennessee.

And then there’s the closet.

That will be the next big project in here. I’m thinking wallpaper might be really fun and give me a chance to do something a little unexpected. I’ll definitely share the closet makeover when I tackle it.

For now, I’m so happy with Savannah’s room to guest room transformation. It feels light, cozy and welcoming, and I love knowing that our friends and family have a comfortable place to stay when they visit.

It still feels like Savannah is a little bit present in the room, but it has a whole new purpose now. And I think that’s what I love most about it.
