Thanks for visiting! Today, I’m excited to showcase my latest project: a stunning thrifted stool makeover that has quickly become my favorite transformation yet.
Among all the thrift shop makeovers I’ve tackled, this one stands out as the most remarkable. The transformation is nothing short of incredible, and the final result surpassed all my expectations.
You’d never believe these stools didn’t come from a charming antique shop in France—they look that authentic and sophisticated!

But they didn’t always look this way.
Here’s a glimpse of how they appeared when I first discovered them on the thrift shop shelf. While they were in solid condition and sturdy, the orange finish was far from my taste.

Here is a photo of my inspiration, and you can see them right here.

STEPS TO GET THE LOOK-
How to Age Thrifted Stools: Easy DIY Tips
Want to give your thrifted stools a beautifully aged look? It’s easier than you might think!
Beneath that old orange varnish lies stunning wood just waiting to be revealed. Here’s how to bring out its natural beauty:
Step 1: Planing the Wood
To start, I used a planer to remove chunks of wood from the stool—this includes the top, legs, and all sides. This technique helps to create a distressed, aged appearance that adds character and charm to the piece.

Next, I used a jigsaw to cut grooves into the top and sides of the stools. This step is crucial for enhancing the aged appearance, giving the wood a more textured and worn look.
By incorporating these grooves, you add depth and character to the piece, making it look like a vintage find.

In Step 3, use a sander to refine the edges and remove any leftover varnish. Sanding helps to smooth out the surface, ensuring that the grooves and distressed areas blend seamlessly with the rest of the stool. This step is essential for achieving a polished, professional look while maintaining the vintage charm. Keep reading for more tips on perfecting your stool makeover!

Step 4: Staining for a Perfect Aged Finish
Once you’ve exposed the bare wood, the final step is to apply stain. For this project, I used a combination of four different stains to achieve the perfect aged look, layering them one by one.
Here’s the process:
- Ebony: Start with a deep, rich ebony stain.
- Driftwood: Apply driftwood stain to add a subtle, natural tone.
- Weathered Grey: Follow with weathered grey to enhance the vintage effect.
- White Wash: Finish with a white wash stain to give the wood a beautifully weathered appearance.
This layering technique creates a complex, nuanced finish that looks authentically aged.

How to Age Wood: DIY Distressing Techniques
Looking to give your wood pieces a perfectly aged appearance? Try distressing them using common tools like a hammer, screwdriver, nail and nail set, old saw blade, chains, and more. These techniques add authentic wear and character to your furniture.
Whenever I go thrifting now, I can’t help but envision how each wooden piece would look with this aging treatment!
