Not all of us live in new construction or have the luxury of the finishes that come in a new construction home.
So how can you make your old home feel new?
Today I am diving into this subject, as it is true to my heart.
Not only do I live in an older home, but I want it to feel fresh and clean and updated.
I work hard on being selective on what I bring in, updates I make, and I am constantly looking at ways to improve upon what we already have.
I found an older home on zillow the other day which is a perfect example of ways to make an old home feel new.
Not only is it the perfect example, it also has a famous past.
Let’s see if you recognize what tv show this popular house was used for in filming!
I will give you a hint….
This show was made famous by it’s 80’s sitcom in San Francisco.
Think you know?
If not, I will be telling you at the end of this post, so read on!
This home was built in 1783 if you can believe that!
It was renovated in 202, has four bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms.
It was purchased by the current homeowners in 2020 for 5.3 million and is now on the market for a whopping 37 million!
Savannah and I recently drove by this house while in California. It is cute but not 37 million dollars cute.
It is 3728 square feet making it $9,925 per square foot!
This house does prove though that there are ways to make an old home feel new.
Let’s dive in!

Here are some ways you can update your older home:
Add more ceiling light. Some people call these pot lights, I call them can lights. Most older homes do not have a lot of ceiling lighting, so adding this will make a huge difference.
Give your walls and ceiling a fresh coat of paint. Something as simple as a fresh coat of paint can make a world of difference. Maybe your walls have dated 1980’s gold/yellow paint? A fresh coat of paint goes a long way!
Declutter. This may seem like an odd way to make an old home feel new, but it will give your home a fresh start and maybe even make you want to tackle other projects that have been put off!
Update your flooring. If you have old dingy dated carpeting, consider ripping it out and replacing with hardwood flooring, engineered hardwoods, or even LVP, luxury vinyl plank. Most older homes have different flooring throughout making the house feel choppy. Adding the same flooring throughout will give your home not only a cohesive feel, but it will make it feel larger!
Replace your kitchen and bathroom hardware and faucets. Even though gold has made a comeback, don’t confuse this will old yellow brass fixtures. Updating these will not cost a fortune but will give your home a more modern appearance.
Update interior doors. Do you have plain dated hollow core doors? You can easily swap them out {don’t forget about updating the hinges and door handles too!} with solid wood doors from your home improvement store.
Paint your trim. A lot of older homes have wood trim. And I know a lot of you would never touch that wood with paint. But consider it as it will instantly freshen up your space, making it look brighter, bigger, fresher, cleaner, and modern.
You don’t have to spend a fortune to update your home. A few simple ideas like the ones above will get you started in making your old home feel new.
You don’t have to do them all at once if it is overwhelming. Pick a year to update lighting. Maybe the next year you invest in new interior and exterior paint?
Don’t bite off more than you can chew because you want this to be a fun process, not a stressful one.
