I am not gonna lie, I am slightly obsessed over todays project!
This DIY antler wreath was something I have been wanting to make for a long time.
In fact, I have had all the supplies sitting around since November and I finally got around to making it!
It is the perfect winter wreath for that awkward time between Christmas and Spring, and I cannot wait to show you how easy it was to put together!
Here is what you will need for this easy DIY antler wreath.
PRODUCTS USED:
Faux antlers. I used about 8 on mine. I purchased mine during the holidays at Walmart in the Christmas section. I cannot find the EXACT ones I used, however, these are very close. I also found these for you.
Here’s a picture of mine straight from the store for you to compare to.
FLORAL WIRE AND/OR ZIP TIES.
Paint, I used Annie Sloan “Country Grey” and it was the perfect natural antler hue.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Start by painting your wire wreath form. This doesn’t have to be perfect, Just lay it out on a protected surface, and using an inexpensive foam brush, paint the front. After that has dried, flip it over and paint the back.
If you find one that is brown to begin with, you can skip this step.
Next you will want to remove the “stems” that are on the faux antlers. Mine just pulled right out and I tossed them.
Then you will want to paint your antlers because they don’t have a realistic color to them.
I held mine up to a real moose antler I own for comparison.
Using the Annie Sloan country grey paint I painted all the faux antlers, front and back.
If you don’t have this chalk paint, I would definitely recommend it. There is no priming needed and it’s honestly the perfect color for this project.
However, you could potentially prime the antlers with a spray paint and then paint them with a mushroom colored craft paint.
It just adds another step.
You can see the color difference in the photo below.
Once they are dry, lay them out on a flat surface on top of your wire hoop to see what direction looks nicest. I played around with mine, flipping some over and overlapping some.
I also took a picture of this for reference, as I was going to dismantle it again to start attaching them permanently.
I found the best way to attach the antlers to the wreath form was floral wire.
However, it did get a little tricky wrapping the wire over the front of the antlers, onto the back to tie it off.
So I used zip ties to hold the antlers in place while I tied the wire around the loose pieces.
This made a world of difference and I simply cut off the zip ties after I had everything secure with the wire.
Once everything was added, I stood back and wanted a little more dimension to the antlers.
Using my fingernail I scraped the paint off randomly on the raised portions of the antlers creating a multi dimensional look. This made them look even more realistic.
Compared to real antler wreaths on Etsy like these, you will save literally hundreds by making your own!
