I tackled this project years ago and the little space has evolved over time.
I am excited to share it with you today as it has become one of my favorite spaces in our home.
We have a rather narrow hallway and the coat closet sat directly across from our sons bedroom.
This created a clausterphobic type space because when the closet door was open it blocked the entire hallway and bedrooms beyond.
Now that it is opened up the hallway feels much larger than it is and it has become a great storage space for items which I will get to in a bit.
If you have a awkward closet that is filled with junk, you may want to try this too!
How to get this look-
The first thing you will want to do is take off the doors entirely.
You may need to fill in some holes where the hinges were, but already you will see things much more opened up!
Give the inside of the closet a fresh coat of paint.
In my case my closet had awful textured walls so I chose to cover them up with shiplap, which I then painted white.
To make the closet look intentional I added in a piece of furniture that fit tightly into the space, wall to wall.
This also gave it a more custom look.
On top I added in a large lamp. We do not have outlets in our closet so I used these rechargable lightbulbs to do the trick!
I filled a large white vase {similar} with my favorite faux stems.
Two books, this one, and this one, are in the center topped with a thrifted black tray and a gold candle.
The large mirror on the back wall helps to make the space feel larger than it is. Similar mirror here. I swiped this one from my daughters apartment when she was away at college.
The furniture piece is an old World Market bar cabinet, similar to the one in our dining room.
This is the closest one I could find for you guys.
The cabinet holds a plethora of things.
The metal baskets I got from McGee and co. when they first opened their online shop years ago. They don’t carry them anymore but I found them here even cheaper! They stack nicely too and for me, hold a ton of papers.
This little area is just to the left of the photo below for reference.
Inside the cabinet I used these these lidded boxes. I have one for each kid and store memorable items in them. Little notes they have written me, birthday cards, trinkets, and all that fun stuff I can’t get rid of.
And then on the bottom in the wooden crates we store our winter gloves in one and hats in the other.
This space functions so much better and is so much more aesthetically pleasing than a messy jammed coat closet.
Wondering where all our coats are stored now?

Here is a little hint:
I would LOVE to know if you have ever turned a closet into a more functional space for you and your family. Let me know in the comments!
Hope you all are having a great day!

OMGosh Melaine….We are building in Cd’A right now and instead of closet doors in my hubby’s den we put up some beautiful wood as a desk and shelves, the wood is Brazilian cherry I think, anyway it is stunning. Another closet in the upstairs guest room with diminishing headroom we opted for no closet door and finished it off inside with left over lap from the fireplace, I didn’t know what to do with it until NOW, love your idea ~ I will start working on that. You are such an inspiration. I’ll send you pix when done.
