I have such a fun project for you today!
Do you remember when I recently posted about this rustic modern home tour?
One of the elements I loved in this home, among others, was this giant concrete bowl on the coffee table.
Let me tell you, I searched high and low online for one that was similar, and short of spending $975 on this one, I decided to attempt making my own.
I hit up my local Goodwill store and couldn’t find a bowl that was just right.
I needed something massive and the shapes and sizes were not perfect for this project.
That is when I saw it……
The perfect size and shape, the only problem is it had a lip on it.
If you go out thrifting and don’t have any luck, I have sourced similar ones to the one I bought below.
This one is $37.00. Not $2.99 like I spent on mine, but in the grand scheme of things, still cheaper than purchasing a ready made concrete bowl.
This one is a tad smaller for under $30.00.
But wait for it.
This is a 16 qt one for under $12.00!
And a 20 qt for under $20.00!
Ok, back to the project.
Here is what you will need to complete this great DIY decorative concrete bowl.
MATERIALS-
{THIS PAINT WILL GIVE YOU A RAW CEMENT LOOK. IF YOU’D LIKE TO DO IT IN BLACK LIKE I DO, FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW}
HOW TO PREP THE BOWL-
The first thing you’ll need to do is get rid of that lip on the bowl so it doesn’t resemble a mixing bowl.
To do this, tear pieces of painters tape and starting on the inside of the bowl, wrap the pieces tightly to the outside of the bowl, over the lip to create a smooth transition.
Repeat until the entire lip is covered up around the perimeter.
Do not worry how messy it looks, you will be covering it up with the stucco mix.
Spray paint the entire bowl with primer and let dry.
HOW TO APPLY STUCCO PATCH-
Turn your bowl upside down and place on a protected surface.
Using a putty knife, apply the stucco patch over the outside of the bowl to cover. It doesn’t need to be perfect.
After that dries, flip the bowl over and do the same to the inside.
For my bowl this used one whole tub of stucco patch.
The second step is to add a final layer of stucco patch to the bowl, inside and out.
This will be the final coat, so it will need to look more finished than the first coat.
In order to do this, use the same method as the first coat, except this time after applying stucco in small areas, use a damp sponge to smooth it out running one direction.
You will be able to see this process in my photos below.
When it is dry, if there’s any areas that look too rough or raised, you can sand them off.
PAINT-
Time to paint your bowl!
The stucco patch is a pretty off white, so you could potentially leave it this color.
You can also use the cement spray paint I linked in the materials above to give it a raw cement look.
Spray paint the entire piece with a flat or matte black spray paint.
{or the cement spray paint}
Next you will want to create age to the piece.
You can do this by dry brushing on different colors of paint, like different shades of grey, off white, or white.
Sand after each coat.
You can also rub on dirt, yes dirt, to the bowl to instantly age it!
Another way to add texture is to mix paint with baking soda and paint it on.
You can get the directions for that in this post.
