Sometimes the simplest projects turn out to be my favorites, and DIY Natural Twig Fence is one of them! Using fallen branches and twigs gathered from the woods behind our home, I created a beautiful, rustic fence that measures approximately 50 feet long and 4 feet tall.
It took me about 20 hours to complete, and I found the entire process incredibly therapeutic. Today, I’m sharing how I built it, the materials I used, and a few things I would do differently next time.

Why I Decided to Build a DIY Natural Twig Fence
One of my favorite things about our property is the natural landscape. We have beautiful mature trees, lush greenery, and plenty of wooded areas.
I wanted to create a little separation between our backyard and the wooded area while maintaining that natural, organic feeling.
Traditional fencing would have looked too structured for this particular space. I wanted something that felt as though it had always been there.
A rustic twig fence was the perfect solution.
I also loved the idea of creating something beautiful using materials that would otherwise be left on the forest floor. Because we have so many fallen branches in our backyard, I knew I could build most of the fence without spending much money.

What Is a Natural Twig Fence?
A twig fence is a natural garden fence made by arranging branches, sticks, and twigs between upright supports.
Unlike traditional wooden fencing, which typically uses uniform boards, a twig fence embraces the natural shapes and textures of branches.
The result is an organic, rustic appearance that blends beautifully into wooded landscapes and cottage-style gardens.
I especially love how the different sizes and colors of the branches create texture and visual interest. No two sections look exactly alike, which is part of the charm.

Materials Needed for a DIY Natural Twig Fence
One of the things I love most about this project is that it requires very few materials.
Here is what I used to build our fence:
- Fallen branches, sticks, and twigs
- Wooden support poles
- A measuring tape
- Work gloves
- Pruning shears or loppers for trimming branches
Our fence measures approximately 50 feet long and 4 feet tall.
I spaced the support poles approximately 3 feet apart to hold the branches in place.
Because we have so many trees on our property, I was able to gather all the branches from our own backyard.
A little note about the support poles: I originally used wooden poles, but I will probably replace them with metal supports for better longevity.
Wooden poles can eventually deteriorate when exposed to moisture and soil, so metal may be a better option if you are planning to keep your fence for years to come.

How to Build a DIY Natural Twig Fence
This project is surprisingly simple, although it does require some time and patience.
Here is how I created ours.
Step 1: Choose the Location for Your Fence
The first step is deciding where you want your fence.
I chose an area along the wooded portion of our backyard where I wanted to create a natural separation between the lawn and the forest.
Our finished fence is approximately 50 feet long.
Before getting started, I determined the general placement and height I wanted.
I chose a height of approximately 4 feet because I wanted the fence to be substantial enough to create a visual boundary without blocking the beautiful trees behind it.

Step 2: Install the Support Poles
Once I had determined the location, I placed wooden support poles along the fence line.
I spaced them approximately 3 feet apart.
These poles serve as the framework that holds the branches and twigs in place.
The branches are stacked horizontally between the upright supports, creating a thick, natural-looking barrier.
As I mentioned earlier, I may eventually replace the wooden poles with metal ones for longevity.
If you are starting this project from scratch, that is something worth considering.

Step 3: Gather Branches and Twigs
This was probably the most time-consuming part of the project, but it was also my favorite.
I simply walked through our backyard gathering fallen branches and twigs.
Because our property is heavily wooded, I had an almost endless supply of materials.
I collected branches in a variety of sizes.
The larger branches helped create the main structure of the fence, while the smaller twigs filled in the gaps and added texture.
I love how the different shapes and sizes give the finished fence a natural, collected appearance.

Step 4: Start Building Your DIY Natural Twig Fence
Once I had gathered enough branches, I began placing them horizontally between the support poles.
I started with larger branches to create the base and gradually layered smaller branches and twigs on top.
The key is to alternate the branches and fill in the open spaces as you go.
There is no need to make everything perfectly straight or uniform. In fact, I think the irregular shapes are what make this type of fence so beautiful.
I continued adding branches until the fence reached approximately 4 feet tall.

Step 5: Fill in the Gaps
After building up the main structure, I went back through and added smaller twigs wherever I noticed open spaces.
This helped create a fuller appearance and gave the fence that beautiful woven look.
I also adjusted a few of the larger branches so they sat more securely between the supports.
The finished fence has so much texture and character. I especially love how it blends into the surrounding trees and greenery.

How Long Did My DIY Natural Twig Fence Take to Build?
Our finished fence measures approximately 50 feet long and 4 feet tall.
From gathering branches to placing the final twigs, the entire project took me approximately 20 hours.
I worked on it a little at a time, which made the process feel much more manageable.
And while 20 hours might sound like a lot, I genuinely enjoyed every minute of it.
There was something incredibly therapeutic about being outside, gathering branches, and slowly watching the fence come together.
It became one of those projects where I could completely lose track of time.
Sometimes creating something with your hands is just as rewarding as the finished result.

How Much Does a DIY Natural Twig Fence Cost?
One of the biggest advantages of building a natural twig fence is how inexpensive it can be.
Because I gathered all the branches and twigs from our own property, the main fencing material cost absolutely nothing.
The only materials I needed to purchase were the support poles.
Your total cost will depend on the length of your fence, the type of supports you choose, and whether you have access to fallen branches.
If you live on a wooded property or have access to branches from tree trimming, this can be a very budget-friendly alternative to traditional decorative garden fencing.
Just make sure you have permission before collecting branches from property you do not own.

What I Would Do Differently Next Time
Although I am so happy with how our fence turned out, there is one thing I would consider changing.
I originally used wooden poles to support the branches.
However, because we live in the Pacific Northwest and receive quite a bit of rain, I am considering replacing them with metal supports.
Metal supports may provide better longevity in our damp climate.
Otherwise, I would build this fence exactly the same way again.
I love the rustic appearance, the natural materials, and how beautifully it blends into our backyard.

Why I Love Our Natural Garden Fence
What started as a simple backyard project has become one of my favorite features in our outdoor space.
The fence creates a beautiful separation between our lawn and the wooded area without taking away from the natural landscape.
I love how the branches blend into the trees behind them.
And because the fence is made from natural materials, it feels like an extension of the surrounding forest.
It is also a wonderful reminder that creating a beautiful home and garden does not always require expensive materials.
Sometimes the best projects come from using what you already have.
Just kitty-corner from our new twig fence is our outdoor entertaining space, another favorite spot in our backyard.
