Diy Denim Flag Art
DIY denim flag art is one of those projects that feels so satisfying—simple materials, no sewing, and a finished piece that looks like you spent serious money. I’ve seen these types of fabric flag artworks selling for hundreds online, and as much as I love supporting artists, I couldn’t shake the thought that I could make one myself using things I already had on hand. And that’s exactly what I did.

This DIY denim flag art project started with a stack of thrifted denim, some scrap muslin fabric, and a pencil. I framed the finished flag and hung it in our dining room, and honestly, I can’t stop staring at it. It’s graphic but subtle, a little bit modern, a little bit vintage—and it fits our home’s style beautifully without being too loud.
If you’ve got old jeans, shirts, or fabric scraps lying around and a blank wall that could use a little love, this no-sew DIY project might be just the thing. Here’s how I made my own flag art, step by step.
Supplies You’ll Need:
- Thrifted denim (a mix of washes looks best)
- Scrap muslin or any cream-colored fabric
- Fabric glue (I used permanent, washable fabric glue)
- Sharp fabric scissors
- Pencil
- Large picture frame with matting
- Tape (I used regular clear tape)

Why I Chose a DIY Denim Flag Art Project
This project had been on my mind for months. Every time I saw a version of a deconstructed American flag made from fabric or canvas in a store or online, I’d save the image for inspiration. I loved the tone-on-tone look—no red, just shades of blue and ivory. It felt neutral but still patriotic, rustic but not too country.
The ones I loved most were way out of budget—some in the $400+ range. So I figured it was time to make my own version.I had a few pairs of old jeans that were either too small or too ripped, a bin of leftover fabric scraps, and a large frame I’d been saving for something special. I also went thrifting and picked up a few extra denim and fabric pieces in the x-large category—you get the most material for the money that way. It was the perfect combo for a handmade flag art piece.
Creating the Flag Background
To start this DIY denim flag art, I tore strips of denim into long pieces for the stripes. The tearing is key here—it gives those perfect frayed edges that make the flag look handmade and vintage. I alternated the washes of denim to give it a little texture and contrast. Some stripes are dark indigo, others are light chambray.
I also tore a square from the same denim for the upper left corner of the flag—this is where the stars would go. Then I glued each strip and square down on a piece of thick backing fabric to give it structure. You could also glue it directly onto the frame matting if you’re confident with spacing.
Making the Stars
The stars are my favorite part. I drew them freehand with pencil onto cream muslin fabric. They’re not all perfectly shaped, and that’s exactly what I wanted. I cut them out using small, sharp scissors so the edges stayed crisp but still soft.
Once I had about 30–35 stars, I glued them onto the upper denim square, arranging them in a slightly scattered but mostly traditional layout. I didn’t measure spacing perfectly—just eyeballed it. This helped keep the overall look organic and relaxed.

Assembling the DIY Denim Flag Art
Once all the pieces were glued down and dried, I trimmed the flag to fit the size of the matting in my frame. I had a large frame already with a white mat, and I simply taped the flag directly onto the matting using clear tape. You could use double-sided tape or Velcro dots too, depending on how heavy your fabric is.
The best part? I didn’t even remove the back of the frame—I just slipped the taped fabric piece in place, closed it up, and hung it in our dining room.
Why I Love This No-Sew Project
This DIY denim flag art project came together in just a few hours, and there’s something really rewarding about using what you already have to create something new. The frayed edges, the hand-cut stars, the slightly uneven lines—it all adds up to something that feels personal and one-of-a-kind.
I love that this flag doesn’t include red. The mix of cream and denim keeps it neutral enough to blend into our everyday decor, but still feels special for summer, the Fourth of July, or any time we want to celebrate in a subtle way.
Plus, knowing that I made it from old jeans, shirts, and scrap fabric makes it even more meaningful. There’s something special about using materials that have a story.

Tips for Making Your Own DIY Denim Flag Art
- Mix denim shades for depth.
- Tear the fabric instead of cutting to get natural frayed edges.
- Use a frame with a mat for a finished, high-end look.
- Don’t worry about perfect symmetry—this project is all about handmade charm.
- You can also stitch the pieces instead of using glue if you prefer a more permanent method.
